International Women's Day- By Joaquin Herrero

As we fly through the week, one important event occurred which some of us may have noticed: On the 8th of this month was International Woman’s Day. Strangely enough, as I glance at our agenda, I discover that the event is not even listed there. What was this event then, some of you may ask? It was a movement established in the 1900’s, originally composed of women in the United States protesting for higher wages, shorter hours, and safer working conditions. From henceforth, it became known internationally as a day in which we celebrate the progress made so far on gender-equality, but also, acknowledge that we still have some ways to go in that regard. A wage-gap still exists between men and women; Sexual harassment, domestic violence, and other tragic events still remind us that we have some ways to go before achieving full gender-parity.

The celebrations were marked around the world: The Empire State building was light up with pink lights on this important occasions. Similarly, pictures of women holding several signs, from multiple countries around the world, were featured prominently on that day in newspapers around the world. A great event to remind us of the progress made on gender equality, but also a great reminder that in today’s world, men as well as women need to fight to ensure that equality is a principle enjoyed by both sexes. So, go out there and find a cause that you support. With enough people, anything can be changed.
