What is AOT?
Attack On Titan is a game based off the popular anime and manga Attack On Titan. Characters in the show swing from building to building to fight as humanity's last defence against the perilous titans who have driven humankind to its last 3 walls. Will game live up to the anime and manga or will it be another failed attempt to cash in on the popularity of the show?
Visual and Audio
Attack on Titan is very good at bringing you into the activity of subjugating titans. The way you quickly accelerate after grabbing on to the colossal titan to deliver the coup de grâce makes the audience feel the satisfaction of a well-performed combo.
The background music is used to give you the feeling of being a one-man army; while you obliterate the titans, the music will provide you that rush of adrenaline for the upcoming fights with humanity's enemy. Outside the fights and missions the graphics are ordinary; it's focused on giving you the feeling of immersion into the anime. It uses a graphical style called 3D cell shading in order to bring out the comic book feel into the aesthetic of the game. The style of the graphics are very similar to the anime which is why they might seem harrowing to an audience that is not familiar with horrific imagery.
Overall, the game uses the graphics and sound as a way to improve the gameplay and make it more satisfying. The graphics style really welcomes you if you just watched the anime or it allows you to get into anime easily. I would rate it 4/5.
Gameplay and story
The story of the game closely follows the gripping story of the manga going past the first season of the show and well into the later chapters of the manga. This however is not perfect the way they deliver the story through cutscenes which are out of sync with the sound effects and the overall polish of the cutscenes are missing so you will be seeing some very cheesy cutscenes which makes the impactful scenes of the anime and manga.
The gameplay itself is very satisfying the impact of every successful hit has so much feedback on the player that it can almost feel as if you are actually cutting the neck of a titan. The 3D maneuver gear which is your main way to move in the game makes you feel like Spiderman zipping through the air and actually not allowing you to grapple on to thin air is a welcome change to all swinging systems.
The way you progress through the game is through leveling up each character by playing them in the story or by also picking up materials to level up your equipment to make your characters limitations less of a factor.
each character you play in the game have different attributes and abilities including each character signature strength such as a character named armin who can’t really fight on his own but can command units in your group manually to target certain parts of the the titan which is completely different to some characters who are good at just going solo.
There are however 2 big problems with the gameplay. One the way the game tries to present the controls is atrocious which is even worse on pc where all the button prompts are xbox one buttons and with keyboard controls designed by aliens which requires you to have 3 hands so if you're on pc you're going to need a controller and with that the mechanics of the game are poorly explained.
Two the game itself suffers from a lack of optimization because you will almost never get to run smoothly through on a pc that is not at least above the average gaming pc on the lowest graphical settings especially when there is any terrain destruction involved.
Overall I would rate this 4/5.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I think that this game suffers from a lack of polish but the core gameplay the visual style of the game is almost spot on and the overall plot of the game is still intriguing just like the anime and as game that is sixty us dollars it definitely will give you tons of content to complete that is interesting and fun with an added benefit of online multiplayer.I would recommend this not only to fans of the anime, but I would also recommend this to anyone looking a fun game that will last them a long time. You can pick this game for ps4, ps3 , Xbox One, PS vita and PC.
